Allison had broken her leg in high school; however, she won twice at the CIF California State Meet. In addition, she ranked second in the national high school rankings with a new best of 4.14 m (13 ft 6+3⁄4 in) in her high school’s senior year.

Moreover, she also received an honorable academic mention by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association. Allison finished eighth at the Pac-10 Championships in her senior year.

Unfortunately, she was unable to improve her best and missed qualification for the NCAA Championships by two places at the regionals. In 2011, she placed eighth at the NCAA Indoor Championships held at Texas A&M and cleared 4.10 m (13-05.25) on her first attempt helping her gain All-American status.

After her university graduation, Allison continued with her pole vaulting career. However, she was unable to rank highly among American athletes. In 2012, Allison aimed for the 2012 London Olympics and delivered her lifetime best record of 4.36 m (14 ft 3+1⁄2 in).

The popular sports blog boasting a large male fanbase complimented the beauty of the then seventeen-year-old athlete under the heading “Pole Vaulting is Sexy, Barely Legal.” The blog’s owner was threatened with legal action by the original photographer, however, the photo had already gained a good deal of traction online and had been reposted by multiple other sites as well.

In no time, Allison became the focus of media attention as publications such as The Washington Post, Los Angeles Times, and The New York Times published comment pieces. Likewise, she also received great international attention, and news of the viral athlete was covered by BBC, The Sydney Morning Herald, and Der Spiegel.

By then, Allison had already been searched over one million times on the internet. Nevertheless, CBS covered her story to highlight how internet exposure can be used to sexualize underage people wrongly.

At first, Allison tried to handle the situation on her own. She had to hire a media consultant after receiving countless emails and requests for photoshoots. She tried to use her newfound fame to make internet users aware of pole vaulting.

A video regarding pole vaulting techniques was uploaded to YouTube, and it attracted over 100,000 views. But unfortunately, people seemed to be more interested in her looks than her athletic talents.

Her father, Allan Stokke, a practicing lawyer, took matters into his own hands and started to review online material to recognize illegal behavior and identify stalkers. Allison Stokke later gave an interview to The Washington Post and said,

“even if none of it is illegal, it just all feels really demeaning. I worked so hard for pole vaulting and all this other stuff, and it’s almost like that doesn’t matter. Nobody sees that. Nobody really sees me.”

Moreover, she described how the unwarranted attention affected her mental health. She claimed that she found the leering “creepy and a little scary” and had to lock doors behind her.
