Who is Billy Bob Thornton?

Born August 4, 1955, Billy Bob Thornton is an actor, filmmaker, and musician. Thornton starred in the independent drama film Sling Blade in 1996. He won an Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay. Likewise, he received a nomination for Best Actor at the Academy Awards. 

Apart from this, Thornton has also been nominated for the Outstanding Lead Actor in a Miniseries or TV Movie at the Emmy Awards for his work in Fargo. He also went on to win the Best Actor in a Miniseries or TV Film Award at the 72nd Golden Globes. Moreover, his role in Goliath was widely appreciated. Thornton was honored with the  Golden Globe Award for Best Actor – Television Series Drama.

Early life, upbringing, and education

Billy Bob Thornton was born in Hot Springs, Arkansas. His mother’s name is Virginia Roberta who was a self-proclaimed psychic. His father’s name is William Raymond Thornton who was a high school history teacher and basketball coach. Likewise, Billy Bob also had a brother named Jimmy Don. Jimmy passed away in 1998. 

In 1973, Billy Bob graduated from Malvern High School. He was interested in sports and was an excellent baseball player. In fact, Thornton had tried out for the Kansas City Royals but could not make it into the team due to an injury. He worked at the Arkansas State Transportation Department after graduating high school and later went on to join Henderson State University. Thornton dropped out of college after studying for two semesters. 

Relationships and dating history

Billy Bob Thornton has been married six times. He was married to Mellisa Gatlin from 1978 to 1980. They have a daughter named Amanda. In 1986, Thornton got married to Toni Lawrence. They separated just a year later. After this, Thornton married actress, Cynda Williams. This union also could not last very long as the couple called it quits in 1992. From 1993 to 1997, Thornton was married to Playboy model Pietra Dawn Cherniak. They have two sons together. 

In the year 2000, Thornton got hitched to actress Angelina Jolie who was twenty years younger than him. Their marriage gained a lot of media attention owing to their eccentric public displays of affection. They divorced in 2003. In 2002, Thornton started dating Connie Angland who gave birth to their daughter, Bella. The couple got married in October 2014.

Billy Bob Thornton stepped into the entertainment world as a musician. He was the singer and the drummer for a band called Tres Hombres. In 1981, Thornton relocated to Los Angeles, California to pursue acting. Likewise, he began to work as a scriptwriter in the early years of his career. Thornton and his friend Tom Epperson tried to sell their scripts to many clients but they were unsuccessful. Thornton made his acting debut in 1988 in the South of Reno. He had a small role in the film where he portrayed the role of a counterman at a restaurant.  

His film One False Move which Thornton had co-written with Epperson was well-received. This helped establish him as a talented actor and screenwriter. Thornton was honored with an Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay, a Writers Guild of America Award, and an Edgar Award. Similarly, Thornton has been a part of successful projects such as Monster’s Ball, Bad Santa, Friday Night Lights, The Man Who Wasn’t There, Bandits, and A Simple Plan. He has also been a part of TV shows like Goliath, Fargo, The Big Bang Theory, Larry King Now, Bandits, Hearts Afire, and The Outsiders.
