Career

Career Beginnings and Sid & Nancy

Webb appeared as a mentally challenged and drug-addicted girlfriend in the film Sid Vicious, a punk rock singer. The film, which mostly received positive responses from critics, premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in May 1986.

Over the years, Sid & Nancy has emerged as a cult classic. Chloe Webb’s performance as Nancy Pungen won several accolades, including the best actress awards from the National Society of Film Critics, the Boston Film Critics, and the San Francisco Film Critics.

The film received a four-out-of-four review by Roger Ebert for The Chicago Sun-Times. Likewise, in Sid Vicious: Rock N’ Roll Star, Malcolm Butt praised Webb’s acting and described her performance as Spungen as “intense, powerful, and most important of all, believable.”

Unfortunately, despite positive reviews, the film tanked at the box office. Despite this, Sid & Nancy has gained classic cult status. Yahoo has also described it! Movies as a “poignant and uncompromising cult classic.”

Recollecting her experience working in Sid & Nancy, Chloe Webb, in an interview with LA Times, said,

“People should remember that the film doesn’t profess to be a history of punk. Instead, it’s the story of an intense relationship between two eccentrics. Even within the punk world, Sid and Nancy were very unconventional. Most punks sneered at the idea of romantic love, but Sid and Nancy went around kissing and holding hands. Naturally, we had to cheat occasionally because how could anyone know what happened when they were alone together? You try to clearly understand the character and remain true to that spirit.”

She further described the filming of the movie as “extremely depressing,” but after she said,

“Seeing it in its completed form, I realize we worked at absolutely the right level.”

Webb added,

“The film was more or less shot in sequence, and it was like being on a road trip that grew increasingly oppressive. Sid and Nancy’s worlds got smaller and smaller; they saw other people less and less and grew increasingly obsessed with each other. Toward the end of the film, it’s as if Gary and I were alone together on a filthy mattress that was like a tiny life raft.”

Webb talked about her intentions with her character and said,

“I tried to convey that Nancy’s rage grew out of pain and disappointment, but I also hope it’s clear that I found nothing cool about Sid and Nancy. Their lives were completely pathetic. Still, we intended for the audience to sympathize with them. We certainly did.”
