Sporting CP is interested in signing Manchester United star Cristiano Ronaldo and is in the process of contacting his camp about a possible deal, 90min understands.
Over the last few weeks, Ronaldo has repeatedly stated that he wants to leave Old Trafford before the transfer window closes. It has only been a year since Ronaldo joined United from Juventus.
Portuguese captain, who is unhappy at United, wants to play in this season’s Champions League to continue his record as the competition’s leading scorer.
His contract with United has one year left – which the club can extend by 12 months – and he had considered returning to United. Still, he broke through following the expiration of his contract with United in either 2023 or 2024.
Sporting will participate in the Champions League in the coming season. In contrast, United – bottom of the Premier League after two rounds – is in the Europa League after placing sixth last season.
90min understands it would be challenging to bring Ronaldo back to Portugal, but both sides are interested in exploring the possibility. However, Ronaldo’s earnings at United are unmanageable for Sporting’s size and power, so serious compromises would need to be made for a deal.
United is now open to letting Ronaldo leave following a change of mind from manager Erik ten Hag. However, owner Joel Glazer wants to retain him due to his stature and commercial appeal.
Ten Hag wants United to sign five players by the end of the transfer window, following a continuous run of names linked with the club. The club is looking for a new central striker anyway, but the need would be greater if Ronaldo were to leave.
Chelsea and Atletico Madrid are other clubs interested in Ronaldo this summer.
