Dwayne Johnson’s journey from an aspiring footballer to Hollywood superstar

Dwayne Johnson had a strong personality from a very young age. Growing up, he watched his father perform in the wrestling rings. Thus, it was evident for him to pursue his career as a wrestler.

Before embracing the famous name “The Rock,” Dwayne chose American football. While he was at the University of Miami for his Bachelor’s Degree, he played several college-level football games.

Dwayne had a promising football career and received several offers to play for Division I collegiate programs. However, he decided to go to the University of Miami on a full scholarship program. He played as a defensive tackle.

In 1991, Dwayne got himself in the Miami Hurricanes’ National Championship Team. However, he could not play crucial matches following several significant injuries, and the team soon replaced him.

After graduating from college in 1995, he even signed with the Calgary Stampeders of the Canadian Football League. But, sadly, even at this stage, he could not make it to the season’s game.

If we think about it now and connect the dots, there was a reason he could not make it to the game. Instead, he was destined to be the legendary “The Rock.”

Dwayne The Rock Johnson recognition as “The Rock”

Dwayne Johnson realized early in his career that football was not what could bring success to him. Hence, soon after he left football, he tried his hands at wrestling.

At the start, he played a few tryout matches under his real name. He even defeated The Brooklyn Brawler on 10 March 1996, shortly after his World Wrestling Federation (WWF now WWE).

During his training period, he won USWA World Tag Team Championship twice. It was one of the reasons why WWF was hungry to sign him for professional-level matches.

He made his debut on T.V. as a professional wrestler through the 1996 Survivor Series. That was the first time that he received his ring name, “Rocky Maivia.”

This name is the derivation of the names of his father and grandfather.

Initially, Dwayne Johnson was hesitant to embrace the name, but he finally agreed on the ring title upon a lot of persuading. But agreeing on the name was not the only challenge for the WWE superstar.

He had to win a lot of matches and, in the process, lose a lot more. The audiences, at the beginning of his wrestling career, were not very welcoming.

They would often insult him with chants such as “Die, Rocky Die” and “Rocky Sucks.”

Most of the negativity coming from the audiences ended within some years when he started giving it back to the viewers, interviewers, and performers.

In 1997, he joined a few other wrestlers in the stable called “The Nation of Domination.” It was after that when Rocky Maivia became “The Rock.”

After a year in The Nation of Domination, The Rock joined a band of elite wrestlers called “The Corporation.” He won his first WWF Championship after entering the group.

He defeated Vince McMahan’s associate, Mankind, at the finals of his first WWF win. Over the years, The Rock had a feud with Mankind.

Later, in trying to gain back the title of the WWF champion, he joined hands with Mankind against some renowned names like Triple H, The Undertaker, and Big Show.

The year from 1998 to 2002 was professionally very fruitful for him. He rose to stardom in between these years. During the period, we saw impressive wins and fights of The Rock in the wrestling ring.

The Rock is a record-breaking world champion. Despite the feuds, the uphills, and downhills in his career, he managed to win 17 WWF/WWE titles, making him one of the best in the industry.

His astonishing career as a wrestler ended for the first time in 2004.

But, even after that year, he continued to appear in non-wrestling events. Again, from 2011 to 2013, his feud with John Cena was very popular.

The Rock made several stage appearances over the years and finally retired from the business in 2019. After that, he switched to being famous in acting, which is why today we know him for his great box-office hits.
