A cast member of Marvel Cinematic Universe, Frank Grillo, reveals that he initially declined to reprise his role as Brock Rumlow/Crossbones in Avengers: Endgame. In the end, he found himself doing the cameo at his son’s request.

In his appearance on the Lights Camera Barstool podcast, Grillo revealed why he didn’t want to return in Endgame. He was upset that he had assumed his role in the MCU would not work out the way he thought it would be after signing a seven-movie deal with Marvel Studios.

He said, “The trajectory of Crossbones took a turn, and he was out of the series really quickly, right? And I was a little pissed off about it because, y’know, I signed a seven-picture deal with them. And it was like, ‘Oh, you’re going to be part of the Marvel Universe, right?’ And it didn’t happen.”

Grillo continued, “And so they called me, and they said, ‘Look, we need you to come down for a week for Avengers,’ and I’m like, ‘For what?’ And they go, ‘Well, we can’t…’ I’m like, ‘No, I’m not doing it.’ So I hung up. I get a callback. I’m like, ‘I’m not coming. Leave me alone.’ And like… who am I? Who am I, right?”

It’s at this point that Grillo’s son entered the fray to plead his case. “My 22-year-old son said to me, ‘You should go and do Avengers. I’m like, ‘Oh yeah, why should I go?’ ‘Because I’m telling you need to go.’ He said, ‘I don’t care if you’re in the movie for 10 seconds. It’s a part of history. It’s a big deal. It’s a big scene. It’s an important thing… everybody gets to kind of smile and go, oh my God!’ And that’s why I did it, because of my son, not because of the Russos”, Grillo recalled.

In 2014’s Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Grillo played Brock Rumlow, a Hydra agent acting like a S.H.I.E.L.D. counterterrorism agent. In 2016’s Captain America: Civil War, the character takes on Crossbones’ persona and subsequently meets his demise in the film’s opening act.

During this sequence in which Captain America and the Avengers go back to the events of the 2012 film The Avengers, Grillo makes a cameo as Rumlow.

In July of 2019, two months after Endgame’s release, it was unknown whether the cameo was included in Grillo’s contract, as the actor stated he still had five films to go on his seven-film contract.

Grillo clarified earlier this year that his time as Brock Rumlow in the MCU was practically over.
