What happened to Jamie at the University of Rochester?
Jamie Boeheim always thought basketball was her destiny. However, she changed her mind just before her sophomore year in Rochester.
Her father, Jim Boeheim, Syracuse’s head coach, went to see her and ensured she was not making a hasty decision about quitting basketball. Although Jamie has always played basketball, winning three state championships at Jamesville-DeWitt High School and playing at the University of Rochester (Division III), she realized just before the first practice of her sophomore year that she didn’t love basketball as much as she used to.

In her opinion, the game had become associated with excessive pressure, anxiety, and stress that took away the joy it once gave her, despite being part of a famous basketball family, including her father and brothers, Buddy and Jimmy Boeheim, who both play for their father, Syracuse University.
Jamie’s struggle with her last name’s association with basketball has been a defining part of her journey. Despite her passion for the game, she felt immense pressure to live up to her family’s legacy, making it hard to balance her love for basketball with expectations. This conflict persisted into her first year at Rochester, and she tried to avoid thinking about it during the offseason.
However, Jamie’s internal struggle became too much for her to bear as tryouts approached. After passing the mid-October fitness test, she broke down in tears, realizing she wanted to quit basketball. The next day, Jamie mustered the courage to meet with her coach, Scheible, and expressed her desire to switch to a team manager role.
Although she didn’t tell her parents about her decision, Jamie did well in her new role, running the shot clock during games and working closely with assistant coaches. Similarly, She was close to her former teammates, which made it easy to work as a team manager.
As a team manager, Jamie remained connected to basketball and her former teammates, many of whom she still considers close friends. Although she hasn’t played basketball in a while, her love for the game remains strong, and she continues to support her family’s legacy. However, Jamie also acknowledges that she doesn’t have to define herself solely by her last name and her family’s relationship with basketball.
When the pandemic hit, Jamie stepped away from her role as a team manager and pursued an internship at Crouse Health’s Bill and Sandra Pomeroy Treatment Center. While basketball may have taken a backseat in her life, Jamie’s passion for helping others remained undiminished.
Why did She quit basketball?
Jamie Boeheim was a talented basketball player in high school, but her struggles with depression led her to give up the sport. Despite this, there were hopes that she would pursue a professional career after graduating from college.

Although Jamie loved basketball, she realized that she wanted more from life. So when the pandemic struck, she had a chance to reevaluate her priorities and decide what she truly wanted to do. Ultimately, she chose to pursue a different path.
In simpler terms, Jamie was good at basketball but stopped playing because of her mental health, and her dad was sad about it.
