Joe Elliot was born in Sheffield, England, on August 1, 1959. He is the son of Joseph William Elliott and Cynthia Gibson. He sadly lost his father in July 2011 after suffering from illness for several weeks.

At the age of 19, he enrolled at King Edward VII School, where he met a member of the Atomic Mass band.

Similarly, he met the rest of the Atomic Mass band in November 1977, which featured guitarist Pete Willis and bassist Rick Savage. He is also a pianist, electronic keyboardist, guitarist, and drummer.
