Educational Background

Jordan Cameron studied at Newbury Park High School, located in Newbury Park, California. As a junior, he was able to make it to the All-Marmonte League first team in 2005.

In 2006, Cameron made Prep Star All-West as well as All-Marmonte League first team as a high school senior. He successfully caught 73 passes for 1,022 yards and 12 touchdowns.

Furthermore, Cameron also played basketball and volleyball during his high school days. He was friends with San Jose State’s quarterback, Jordan LaSecla.

After graduating high school, Cameron decided to become a professional basketball player. He joined Brigham Young University but after redshirting his freshman year, Jordan changed his career path altogether.

During his freshman year, Jordan was noticed by the University of Southern California (USC) football coach Pete Carroll. Carroll witnessed Cameron catching passes from his brother, Colby, and this impressed him greatly.

Hence, with the help of Pete Carroll, Cameron was offered a scholarship to USC. As a result, Jordan made the life-changing decision to pursue a career in football.

Jordan transferred to USC in 2007. Unfortunately, USC declined some of his college credits from Brigham Young University. Thus, Cameron made the last-minute decision to attend Ventura College.

Due to these problems, Cameron missed the football season. Luckily, he was offered to try and rejoin the team in 2008. Finally, a year later, Cameron enrolled at USC.

In an interview with Cleveland.com back in 2013, Cameron Jordan talked about his decision to join USC and said,

“It was definitely the toughest decision I ever had to make and I just had to tune out a lot of what was being said. If I didn’t make that decision, I definitely wouldn’t be here today.”

In USC, Jordan briefly served as a wide receiver for the Trojans in the 2008 and 2009 seasons. However, he was unable to make any catches.

Just before his senior year, Jordan decided to play as a tight end instead of a wide receiver. He was able to catch 16 passes for 126 yards and a touchdown in his senior year.

Due to this, Cameron Jordan was expected to be mid to late-round pick in the 2011 NFL Draft. Luckily, he was chosen by the Cleveland Browns as the 102nd pick in the 2011 NFL Draft.

Jordan was voted to the Pro Bowl in December 2013. The star player went into a two-year-long contract worth $15 million, with $5 million guaranteed, with the Miami Dolphins on March 12, 2015.

Unluckily, Cameron ended up on the injured reserve on November 5, 2016, owing to a season-ending concussion injury. He suffered four concussions in six seasons and due to this, Jordan announced his retirement from the NFL on March 10, 2017.

In a 2017 interview with ESPN, Cameron discussed this short-lived career and said,

“I started thinking about concussions too much. You can’t play football like that. If I didn’t get concussions, I’d probably keep playing. It’s one of those things. I can’t risk my mental health in the future. I don’t have any symptoms now. I’m perfectly fine. But they can’t tell me with 100 percent certainty that if I keep playing and I get more concussions, that I’m going to be OK.”

He further added,

“I’m not risking that at all. There’s nothing more important than your health. It’s just not worth it to me. Do I want to risk even the slightest chance of having a mental disorder or depression, all these things, for a game that has already given me what I wanted to get out of it? The answer is no.”,
