Lionel Messi scored Paris Saint-Germain’s only goal in the first five minutes to return to the top of Ligue 1.

Marseille’s draw with Rennes earlier on Sunday briefly put them top of the table.

So Christophe Galtier’s PSG had to beat a Lyon side that had started the season well but has slowed down since then.

Messi’s goal marked the start of the game. He exchanged passes with Neymar and stroked the ball into the bottom corner with his left foot.

Kylian Mbappe had two chances to extend PSG’s lead. Lyon was hardly out of it, though. A few minutes later, Gianluigi Donnarumma denied Toko Ekambi and Alexandre Lacazette at the other end.

The visitors regained the ascendancy and almost added a second goal when Castello Lukeba cleared one off the line from Messi after dummying goalkeeper Anthony Lopes.

Before the end of the match, the ball was in the net again, with Sergio Ramos nodding home a rebound from a Messi free-kick that Lopes had tipped over. However, an offside flag was raised, and the goal was disallowed.

PSG have not conceded in any of their four Ligue 1 games since recovering from a 1-1 draw against Monaco last month.

At the top of the table, PSG leads Marseille by two points, with a home game against Nice after the break.
