Magic Johnson Illness: Is He Sick?

Nearly 30 years after he initially disclosed his HIV diagnosis, Johnson, still HIV-undetectable today, spoke openly about his life with the illness and his profession in an exclusive interview with “CBS Mornings.”

The Lakers star is currently a devoted father and grandfather, as well as the CEO of Magic Johnson Enterprises, a philanthropist, and a wealthy businessman. During this period, he has been with Cookie, and neither she nor their son, Earvin Johnson III, are HIV positive.

When Johnson was first diagnosed, he believed the virus would kill him.

“I had to learn much about the illness, including HIV and AIDS. I had to make sure I was curious and open-minded enough to seek out a lot of information,” he said.

Johnson first became aware of his condition following a pre-NBA season physical in 1991–1992. His return from a preseason match in Utah was requested so that Lakers team doctor Dr. Michael Mellman could personally break the news to him. Johnson described his initial reaction to the news as being “devastated.”

Johnson shocked the sports world on November 7, 1991, when he announced his immediate retirement from basketball after testing positive for the virus, which was virtually unknown at the time.

He had two more appearances there before finally leaving the league in 1996.

Johnson, who is now 63, has emerged as a prominent proponent of HIV education and prevention. He has never developed AIDS, and medication has helped keep his HIV undetectable.

NBA Player Magic Johnson Wife And Kids

Magic Johnson wed Earlitha “Cookie” Kelly at the First AME Church in Los Angeles on September 14, 1991. Cookie played basketball in college before going on to become a prosperous businesswoman.

Although the inspirational pair has been together for more than 31 years, their relationship dates back further. They first met in 1977, and after getting to know one another for a few weeks, they became fast friends.

The only thing keeping them from ending their relationship was a deep feeling of commitment and trust.

Even though Magic Johnson is a great basketball player, his three children view him more as a father than anything else.

With his ex-girlfriend Melissa Mitchell, the retired point guard had his son Andre, now 42, in 1981. In addition, Magic and his wife Earlitha “Cookie” Johnson have two kids together: EJ, 31, and Elisa, 28.

Magic and Cookie have always been forthright about the duties of being parents, as demonstrated by the time Magic told Ellen DeGeneres that he was “so happy” when their son EJ came out as gay.

The key, he continued, is to stop trying to dictate what your son or daughter should be or what you want them to become. “It’s about loving them for who they are and for what they choose to be,”
