Mark Strong Early Life, Parents, and Upbringing
Mark Strong, born Marco Giuseppe Salussolia, is the son of an Austrian mother named Waltraud D Schrempf and an Italian father, Giuseppe A Salussolia. His father abandoned his family soon after Mark’s birth. After his father’s departure, Mark’s mother had to work as an au pair to support the family.
Later, his mother later relocated to Germany in search of better work opportunities. Strong said his mother had to move to Germany since “Britain was going through this whole crisis in the Seventies.”
Mark’s mother legally changed his name by deed poll from Marco Giuseppe Salussolia to Mark Strong to help him fit in better with his English friends. Mark dreamed of becoming an actor after seeing French actor Alain Delon’s films growing up.
However, he did not actually consider becoming an actor until his teenage years. In fact, before actually deciding to become an actor, Strong intended to pursue a career in law.
In an interview, Mark Strong recollected the memories of his childhood and said,
“The home I grew up in was a flat in Myddelton Square in London’s Islington, a beautiful Georgian square with a huge church in the middle. We moved around a lot when I was a kid. I remember flats in Walthamstow, Clapton, Stoke Newington, and Edmonton.”
Likewise, Strong talked about his struggles growing up in an episode of the The Road Less Travelled by Belstaff. He said,
“I mean when you’re having to take care of yourself from a very young age it makes you incredibly independent and self-sufficient and unafraid because you’ve got nothing to lose. [It] pushes me forward and tells me not to be afraid and that nobody is better than you.”
Talking about how he finally decided to become an actor, Strong said,
“I had an instinct that I wanted to act and so I pursued it. My mum loves watching stuff I’m in and she’s really looking forward to this latest thing I’m doing.’
Educational Background
Mark Strong is a well-educated man. At the age of 5, his mother sent him to a state-funded boarding school located in Surrey. He studied there until the age of 18. Mark would fly to Germany on his own during the school holidays to meet his mother.
According to Strong,
“Its remit was to cater for single-parent families. Of course, I missed my mum when I was there, but I’d see her in the holidays. When you’re a child you just deal with what you’re given.”
He studied at Wymondham College, located in Morley, Norfolk. Mark joined two punk bands during his time there, the Electric Hoax and Private Party.
After this, he enrolled at the Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich. Strong, who initially wanted to become a lawyer, returned to London just one year after studying German law at the Munich-based university.
After dropping out of Ludwig Maximilian University, Strong studied English and Drama at Royal Holloway, University of London. He later joined the Bristol Old Vic Theater School.

Mark Strong Children
Mark Strong is the proud father of two boys. He and his wife, Liza Marshall, share sons Gabriel and Roman.
In an interview, Mark talked about how not having a father figure growing up has affected his own parenting. The Elephant Juice actor said,
“I do realize there’s a disconnect sometimes that comes from my not having anything to relate to in terms of how my father treated me, so I have to be very careful. If they’re fighting, for example, to realize that’s just what boys do and it’ll pass, rather than jump in and be a mediator and try and get to the root of why they’re squabbling.”
Likewise, in an episode of the podcast The Road Less Travelled, Strong discussed the link between his upbringing and how he is raising his own two sons. He said,
“I take my responsibility as a father and my behavior as a father really seriously because I have no blueprint, I have nobody who kind of told me, I had no father to look up to and no father to tell me what to do.”
Moreover, Strong expressed his disdain towards sending his kids to boarding school despite attending one as a child. The celebrated actor doesn’t want to send his sons to boarding school not because he had a bad experience but because he enjoys kids’ company. He wants a family unit that is present.
