The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department and the Los Angeles Fire Department are facing abuse of privacy charges in a district court just over a mile from the former residence of Kobe Bryant.
Bryant claims deputies took the photos without investigation and shared them with firefighters. As part of the lawsuit, the deputy showed the photos to bar patrons, and a firefighter showed them to colleagues off-duty.
Vanessa Bryant seeks a settlement in the number of unspecified millions.
“Mrs. Bryant feels ill at the thought that sheriff’s deputies, firefighters, and members of the public have gawked at gratuitous images of her deceased husband and child,” a complaint stated. “She lives in fear that she or her children will one day confront horrific images of their loved ones online.”
As Kobe Bryant, his 13-year-old daughter Gianna, and other parents and players flew to a basketball tournament; their chartered helicopter crashed in the Los Angeles area of Calabasas. A safety official blamed the crash on pilot error.
Vanessa Bryant has also filed a lawsuit against the helicopter charter company and the deceased pilot’s estate.
The company settled a similar lawsuit brought by two families whose relatives died in the crash for $2.5 million. However, there was no settlement in Vanessa Bryant’s case, indicating she is seeking more compensation.
Kobe Bryant’s age was 41 when he died. He won five NBA championships and entered the Hall of Fame in 2020.
