This French production, helmed by director Maïwenn, features Depp portraying King Louis XV. It serves as his first project since a contentious legal battle with his ex-wife, Amber Heard, resulted in a verdict largely in his favor.

During the 2022 defamation trial, Depp claimed that Heard’s allegations had led to a loss of job opportunities. However, the jury vindicated him by ordering Heard to pay $10 million in damages while she received $2 million.

Reflecting on this experience, Depp addressed the issue of feeling boycotted by Hollywood, stating that it would be impossible not to sense it.

Depp’s removal from the “Fantastic Beasts” franchise was one of the most significant instances where he faced professional consequences. However, he now asserts that he has no interest in returning to mainstream studio projects, stating,

“I don’t have much further need for Hollywood.”

While Depp’s film “Jeanne du Barry” premiered in French cinemas, it is yet to secure distribution in the United States. As a result, the press conference surrounding the film at Cannes was marked by its peculiarities, with a delayed start and Depp’s delayed arrival. Nevertheless, he emphasized that much of what has been written about him in recent years is a work of fiction.

Critics have questioned whether Cannes should have given Depp such a major platform. Still, he compared it to a scenario where he would be barred from visiting a fast-food restaurant due to a small group of dissenters.

Regarding his so-called “comeback,” Depp dismissed the notion, stating that he hadn’t gone anywhere and had simply experienced a period of fewer calls.

Depp’s film received an enthusiastic reception during his return to Cannes, with a standing ovation lasting over a minute. This was a poignant moment for the actor, who has faced personal and professional challenges in recent years.
