As Brittney Griner has been detained in Russia pending a trial, she is speaking for the first time in a long time, and her words are an emotional plea to President Biden.
Through Griner’s representatives, excerpts of a letter sent to the White House this week were published Sunday. She expresses bullet-point thoughts as she faces years behind bars for allegedly bringing hash cartridges into the country.
On Friday, Griner’s criminal trial in Moscow began. In her luggage, the 6-foot-9 Phoenix Mercury player is accused of carrying less than a gram of cannabis oil.
Griner’s wife, Cherelle, told CNN last week that Griner is being transported in a “very, very, very tiny cage” on his five-hour drive to and from the court.
In addition, she said that the government does not seem to be making the “maximum effort” to bring her wife home.
“I have to also push people to make sure that things that they’re telling me is also matching their action. I can’t let up, it’s over 130 days and BG’s still not back.”
The Biden administration says it is “actively” involved in bringing Brittney home. The national security adviser, Jake Sullivan said,
“The case has the fullest attention of the president and every senior member of his national security and diplomatic team. We are actively working to find a resolution to this case and will continue to do so without rest until we get Brittney safely home.”
The federal government missed Cherelle’s phone call last month when she was supposed to talk with her wife, Brittney Griner.
Beyond the obvious: Griner is a political hostage in a war-torn country. Nothing she did deserve this. Until she returns home, we will never stop demanding her release.
