Tan Kin Lian, a prominent Singaporean businessman, played a significant role in the growth of NTUC Income, serving as its CEO from 1997 to 2007.
His journey within the organization began in 1977 when he assumed the role of general manager at a remarkably young age of 29.
Demonstrating his leadership acumen, he later ascended to the position of chief executive officer, a role he held until April 2007.
Tan Kin Lian’s engagement with public service extended to the political arena when he contested the 2011 presidential election.
On 11 August 2023, he again made headlines, announcing his candidacy for the upcoming 2023 presidential election.

Singaporean politics has been stirred by a recent scandal involving Tan Kin Lian, a presidential hopeful, and his controversial social media posts centered around encounters with “pretty girls.”
As Tan Kin Lian prepares to enter the race for the Singaporean presidency, these posts have ignited a firestorm of political discourse.
In his defense, Tan Kin Lian has labeled the outrage against his posts as part of a calculated “smear campaign” orchestrated by his opponents and the media.
He alleged that screenshots of his Facebook posts, detailing his observations of women during activities like jogging or shopping, were circulated to mainstream media outlets.
Initially attributing this action to an individual, he later asserted that an organized “attack group” was behind it, going so far as to implicate media editors in the endeavor.
The controversy deepened when a women’s rights organization, the Association of Women for Action and Research (Aware), expressed concerns about Tan’s perceived objectification of women in his posts.
These concerns were echoed by statements from the Presidential Elections Committee (PEC).
However, the PEC stated that they were unaware of Tan Kin Lian’s social media posts before granting him eligibility to stand for the Presidential Election, and they lacked the authority to revoke his eligibility.
Tan Kin Lian Accusation Over Tharman Shanmugaratnam
Tan Kin Lian escalated the situation by accusing government figures of dishonorable behavior, specifically targeting former Senior Minister Tharman Shanmugaratnam.
He accused him of being involved in the smear campaign. The ex-CEO of Income Insurance Singapore also stated that he would change his mind about him and consider being unfit to be the president of Singapore.
Tan Kin Lian, however, later retracted his accusations against Tharman.
As Tan Kin Lian and Tharman Shanmugaratnam are potential candidates being granted eligibility certificates for the presidential election, Tan Kin probably thought it was Tharman Shanmugaratnam’s hand regarding the ‘Pretty Girls’ scandal and controversy.
On his Facebook page, Tan attempted to downplay the controversy by asserting that appreciating “pretty girls” was a normal human sentiment and that the uproar might be driven by those who don’t consider themselves “pretty.”
In another statement, Mr. Tan posted his complete disagreement with Aware’s claims and implications that he portrays women in an objectifying manner through his posts.
He also expressed confidence in the integrity of Singaporeans to prevent the electoral process from being tarnished by unwarranted assaults.
