“However, “basketball was king in Philadelphia,” according to Chamberlain, so he began playing the sport in seventh grade while attending Shoemaker Junior High School.

Chamberlain wore the number five jersey for the Overbrook Hilltoppers basketball team.

In addition, Chamberlain had a natural advantage over his peers because of his scoring ability, physical power, and shot-blocking abilities.

During the 1953 high school season, Chamberlain averaged 31 points per game and led his team to a 71-62 victory over the Northeast High School team captained by Hall of Fame guard Guy Rodgers.

Overbrook won the Philadelphia Public League title and a position in the city championship game against West Catholic High School.
